FAQs
I’ve never been to a meditation class before. What can I expect?
“Still Life Meditation” provides meditation sessions in a relaxed, supportive and friendly environment. You will be guided through a meditation, focusing on the breath and body. You don’t need to have any experience, and won’t be left wondering “What am I supposed to be doing or thinking?” Meditation is a skill that teaches us to respond, rather than react to the ups and downs of life. A regular practice can reduce the mental chatter, and the unhelpful negative thoughts that can really drain us of energy. It’s common to leave a session feeling happier and more relaxed, because you’ve rested your mind and body.
What type of meditation do you teach?
Sessions at Still Life Meditation are practical and non-religious. Commonly you will experience mindfulness meditation, which is attention to the body and breath in the present moment, along with relaxation meditation, allowing the mind and body to rest. Self-inquiry based meditations, which assists in understanding ourselves a little better, are also practiced. Practicing compassion for ourselves and others is often incorporated into our meditations. To get us in the present moment, attention to the breath and sensations in the body is always an important aspect of the practice.
How is the class structured?
A typical session will involve a short introduction followed by a 30-minute meditation. A breathing exercise or short activity, such as gentle stretches to loosen the body, may also be included. There will be time for discussion at the end.
I’ve tried meditation before but my mind kept wandering. How can I get better at it?
Ahh, yes… the mind wandering off and not doing what you want it to do! We have this idea that if our mind wanders then we are doing meditation all wrong. In-fact when we notice that the mind has wandered, we know that we are doing it right. Meditation, with the help of an instructor, is a learned skill that teaches us to observe our thoughts, and to gently bring our attention back to the present, without judgement. With practice we get better at being in the present moment.
What types of people attend meditation classes?
People from all walks of life from students, people in the health and service industry, professionals, tradies, retirees and homemakers are attracted to meditation for a range of reasons, including simply wanting to be more focused, sleep better, improve memory and increase energy. People will also sometimes turn to meditation when they are feeling stressed out and overwhelmed by life, and so look for a way to improve their overall sense of wellbeing.
I have an app for that. Why should I attend a class?
Apps or other online meditations are a great back-up if you need something on the spot (eg your mind is racing at night and you can’t sleep), or you can’t make it to a class, or perhaps an app gives you motivation to practice at home. An app however can’t replace the experience of meditating in a group with a trained instructor. Meditating with others, in a supportive environment, allows for a greater learning experience and a heightened sense of connection with others. You also have access to feedback and support. Attending a group meditation can also be helpful in creating a regular habit and can also support a home practice.
What do I need to bring along to class?
Wear comfortable clothes. Bring along a drink bottle and a shawl or small blanket if you wish. The body can cool down after being still for a while, particularly if doing a lying down meditation. You are welcome to remove your shoes.
Do I have to sit cross-legged on the floor?
Definitely not. You have the option to sit on a seat or on a cushion on the floor. Whatever works for you.
I can’t sit for a long time due to health reasons but I’d like to attend. Can you suggest something?
Please discuss any health concerns you may have with your instructor in advance so that you can get the most out of the sessions. Whether you have physical pain, such as back pain, or any other issues such as vertigo, we can set up a comfortable place for you where you feel supported, and discomfort is minimised.
I experience depression/anxiety and heard that meditation can help. Is this true?
Meditation can make symptoms of anxiety and depression more manageable, as it teaches you to pay attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment. During stressful situations the skills gained from a meditation and mindful breathing practice can help you shift your mind and body out of a stress response towards more of a feeling of calm and control. Meditation is never a replacement for seeking guidance from a health professional, however attending a class can be one of the many ways to support you on your path to good mental health. If you are currently seeing a health professional for your mental health, please discuss with them whether meditation is right for you at this time. Sometimes past traumas can surface during meditation so it is important to seek advice. Your meditation instructor is always there to support you along the way, so please speak to them if you have any concerns or questions.
